Desert Island Discs becomes #DesertIslandHDDs
We love listening to BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs programme, a simple concept asking well-known people the same question each week:
“If you were a castaway alone on a desert island, which eight gramophone records would you choose to have with you, assuming of course, that you had a gramophone and an
inexhaustible supply of needles?”
Guest ‘castaways’ are also asked which book and luxury item they would like to have with them. The format has been the same since the very first show in 1942 and has become a national institution in the UK. However, since legendary BBC radio presenter Roy Plomley had his light bulb moment all those years ago, late one night in his pyjamas as the story goes, we are no longer limited to analogue storage devices like gramophones.
If Mr. Plomley had been on the airwaves in 2012, surely he’d be asking people what digital content they’d choose to have stored on a trusty hard disk drive?
From January 2012 we’ll be playing around with this modern twist, asking the Tweeting public which movies, box sets, albums or photographs they couldn’t live without. Each week we’ll ask the following question, focussing on a different type of content:
“If you were a castaway alone on a desert island, which (movies / box sets / albums / photographs) would you choose to have stored on your hard disk drive, assuming of course,
that you had a PC and an unlimited power supply?”
Over the years Mozart has been the most popular Desert Island Discs artist, while Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D minor ‘Choral’ is the top track. But what will prove to be the most popular #DesertIslandHDD content? Will The Office claim the ‘Best Box Set’ accolade? Will Tom Hanks or Tom Cruise movies get the most votes? Or will we see family photos outweigh iconic images?

Real World Labs: Seagate Momentus XT 750GB SATA III Hybrid Disk Drive
As seen in our benchmarks the 2nd Generation Momentus XT 750GB 2.5″ SATA III hybrid drive is not the power monster some of you may had expected it to be but to be completely honest with all of you this was not the intention of Seagate in the first place. The Momentus XT line is mostly meant to replace normal HDDs inside notebooks and offer faster boot-up and load times by utilizing the 8GB onboard SLC NAND Flash memory but that’s just about what you can expect from it.

The Street: CES 2012 – Seagate Sends Out Strong Message
Hard drive specialist Seagate may not be a headline-grabbing gadget maker, but still managed to cause a ripple at an investor reception held at CES earlier this week.
“The overarching theme of the event was that the industry is entering a ‘new normal’ where cyclical volatility may be lower and, by default, profits are generally higher,” explained Goldman Sachs analyst Bill Shope, in a note released on Thursday.
Mobile Bloom: Seagate Personal Server 4G LTE announced at CES 2012
At CES 2012, Seagate has unveiled a working model of its latest device, the Personal Server 4G LTE Wi-Fi which is supposed to revolutionize on-the-fly internet connectivity and storage. In a nutshell, the device is a mix of the 4G LTE mobile hotspot and the Seagate GoFlex Satellite and offers features of both of these products.

Combine a portable wireless hard drive with a blazing fast 4G LTE hotspot and you have a mobile file and media server like no other. A prototype update to Seagate’s Satellite GoFlex wireless hard drive, this device allows up to three simultaneous users to stream its music, photos, or videos to any Wi-Fi-enabled device.

AnandTech: CES – Seagate Combines 500GB Portable Drive With Mobile Hotspot in Proof of Concept
While perusing the Verizon Wireless booth, a chunky little device caught our eye. Though considered a proof of concept, and not scheduled for release yet, a Seagate device was on display that combined an LTE mobile hotspot with 500GB of storage on-board.
Big Bruin: Seagate GoFlex Desk 4TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive
The Seagate GoFlex Desk 4TB USB 3.0 hard drive delivers exactly what we’ve come to expect from Seagate. The massive capacity could probably store your entire music, movie, and picture collections with room to spare – and with the USB 3.0 interface it can transfer it with lightening speed. The included software is more of a basic solution, similar to Microsoft Backup. If you want something a bit more robust you’ll have to pony up $50 or find another third-party solution.
