Did you test to see if it worked before you froze it?

After having my Maxtor OneTouch III 160GB just die (no noise.. just dead) I am leary about external storage.

I would have done some 'benchmark' type stuff before you did it.

Considering I was told that it would be over $1,300 to reclaim the data, I am surprised that seagate isn't a bit more open about using multiple forms of 'backup' and that external drives are best for transfering data between systems and not as a typical single source of backup.

I am now going to use hard drives, Mozy and Jungle Disk/AWS to keep my important data backed up as it is still cheaper than disk recovery. As the saying goes, it isn't IF you drive will fail, it is WHEN.

Looking forward to seeing the results.. make sure you let it thaw and come up to room temperature before running =)

Come on Seagate, if you are not going to release it on time, please tell us. I for one have been holding off buying a new hard drive waiting for this bad boy for about 3 months now. Had I known it was going to be delayed I would have bought the 320 7200 RPM model. Do you have any realistic release date available?

I'll go with groundhog day. Seems like a good choice.

Whether or not it'll work depends on how it was placed in the ice (i.e. did water get in) and how it's stored in the ice (i.e. in a waterproof container) and how it's recovered (i.e. will water get in?) The only other thing besides water damage that I could see is having the cold pop a solder joint. So if it's in a waterproof container or it's stored and recovered in a non-water-invasive fashion, then I'd guess it'll run fine.

If water gets in, that's another kettle of fish. The I'd bet it's dead from corrosion.

Seriously, what is going on with the Momentus 7200.4? It has been on some sites for about 3 weeks now. I called Seagate twice and they have no idea what's going on. Does anyone know if it was delayed, or a realistic time to expect to be able to order one?

Another proof point in support of your latest post.

Wal-mart just announced a 7% increase in revenues for the current quarter over the same period last year. Similar to your McDonald's analogy, people still need to buy stuff, but they are doing it at Wal-mart instead of the high-priced boutiques.

Keep up the good work,

Wilson

Interesting post, Pete. This trend has been building for the past several months, and we've also noticed at Ocarina that companies that can help rein in a storage budget, such as those who increase available disk space, are benefiting. See my post: http://storageoptimization.wordpress.com/2008/07/18/whats-hot-in-storage-spending-less/.

Basically, storage budget is about getting a certain amount of capacity for a certain amount of dollars. For those dollars, you also want performance and features. When budgets are tight, it is true that people’s first reaction might be, okay, now I’ll have to go buy that cheap storage instead of the feature-rich stuff from my current vendor. An alternative, though, is to create that capacity on your feature-rich current vendor’s storage, by making that storage affordable through content-aware compression and deduplication. Most shops will find that they can free up at least half of their existing storage footprint with the use of tools like Ocarina, without taking any hit on performance at all.....and still keep their existing vendors, features, interfaces, and processes the same.
Thanks,
Carter George

Pete,

What are the system requirements for these drives? Can I slap one into my MacBook Pro? Or is it BIOS and Windows only? Or perhaps it needs a special BIOS?

Thanks!

Pete,

It's really nice to see this post, since this is a topic I've been following since I wrote about it in Storage Magazine a few years back. My hypothesis then was that 2.5" drives were too small to make up for the physical size and power required in enterprise storage. Sounds like we were on the same wavelength!

I agree with you. Facebook is very much a victim of their own runaway success. If they don't find a way to better monotize their business they risk having to shift to a subscription model or worse still, risk being bought up by a larger company that might alter its direction or focus.

Personally, I think micro-transactions are the way to do it. Bling, games, unique features a la carte. Here's an example: if ringtones are an over 4 billion a year industry, surely they can come up with something that will appeal to their customers.

The FreeAgent Go for Mac and the FreeAgent Desk for Mac are formatted for the Mac OS and are TimeMachine ready. Simply connect the drive via your interface of choice - USB 2.0, FireWire 400 or FireWire 800 - and you'll be automatically prompted to select the drive for TimeMachine.

The FreeAgent Go for Mac is the first external storage device to include a docking station. The FreeAgent Go Dock eliminates the hassle of finding an available port and reaching behind your computer each time you'd like to access your music, photos, videos and other digital stuff. With up to 500 GB of storage, you'll have enough room for up to 160,000 photos or 120,000 music downloads or 500 Hours of Video.

Regarding the difference between Lacie and Seagate, all of the Seagate FreeAgent drives carry an industry-leading 5-year warranty that you'll not find with Lacie. You won't get the convenience of a docking station either.

I searched your site and found nothing on the ST-225 and that saddens me. I think you should have a post about the beloved Seagate ST-225 from Seagate's perspective. It was the 20MB entry to computing for so many people. For those of us who serviced computers we can reminisce about all its MFM goodness. Honoring the past we can see how far we have come. Thanks!

How is Seagate FreeAgent Go different and better than using my iPod or a LaCie pocket drive with my Mac? My iPod or an external drive is/can boot and sync to my computer or any Mac. I believe with an opensource 'nix flavoured OS I could also do similar feats. Are you sure this is a "first" or even very special in some way? I think I missed something. I know this is a risky post, but my intent is not to flame in any way. It specifies pc-only, so I don't think I can give it a whirl.

I understand from the article "Seagate 500GB Notebook Hard Drives Power New Acer Notebook Computers With World's Highest Capacity And Speed" that the Seagate Momentus 500GB 5400.6 drive is shipping (at least on a limited basis).
As we are now well into Q4 2008, do you have a more specific date for general availability for the Seagate Momentus 500GB 5400.6 and 7200.4.

The information shows these drives to be exceptional performers and better than anything else on the market and I am keen to procur one at the earliest opportunity.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the v2 product looks like, v1 from most start-ups is always disappointing to me, I want every cool feature and function from day one!

Firstly, fantastic site. I had to sit down and work this through but in total I have 3.7GB of storage. I have excluded the various iPods around the house and the PVR! But here is the breakdown. 500GB iMac, 80 GB MacBook Air, 500GB Apple Time Capsule, 1TB Seagate Freeagent Mac Desk, 320 GB Seagate Freeagent Mac Go. I also have a WD Passport 120GB and a WD My Book 250GB both of which are now used for off-site storage of photographs, documents, video and music. I must say that I am very impressed by the new Freeagents in the Mac flavour, I was about to purchase the WD Studio editions but luckily these cam out just before I made my purchase. I bought the 1TB Freeagent to act as my main Time Machine storage area as well as my iTunes library. The Apple Time Capsule is used for the sole back up of my MacBook Air as this, I think makes perfect sense – it happens automatically so I never forget or put it off!

I think this is an old idea, renewed! I had an opportunity in the HPC space to play with dCache (http://www.dcache.org/). It leveraged internal storage of compute nodes, as a "cloud" of accessible storage.

I always go back to the idea that if a "Server" was so good at processing IO as a target (rather then initiator), then HDS, IBM, EMC, etc would be running disks behind "Servers" and not purpose built Storage Controllers.

In most cases, Server based solutions, require extra copies of a data set in order to protect from single points of failure (look at LeftHands network raid as an example).

I think SSD drives are going to require two things to occur to really "take off" in enterprise storage. One option is to leverage SSD drives in products that can do block level storage tiering (i.e. Compellent, Equallogic, futures for Pillar Data) However, I don't think they alone will help the progression, I think costs will have to continue to drop. At the end of the data SSDs will really fill a spot where hot spot contentions occur in data sets and caching needs to be long term (i.e. more than seconds/minutes)

And it's only going to grow. My favorite factoid is that the movie Panasonic used to demo their 150" HD flat panel TV was 720 GB.

Good post. I didn't realize that consumer storage was so heavy on video but it makes sense.

Yeah, I've definitely straddling the fence between centuries.

It's almost exacly 3" X 5", and a half-inch thick. It weighs 5.6 oz. Here's the details: http://freeagent.seagate.com/en-us/hard-drive/portable-hard-drive/Free-Agent.html

Wow. That's pretty thin - must have been some impressive engineering go into that to make it that thin. However, I didn't really get to see how tall it is. And how much weight will it add to my backpack?

BTW - You have a checkbook? And you carry it around with you? That is so 20th Century!

Hi Pete,
Mike from ParaScale here. Nice post and thanks for the mention. Our hardware independence is real but we are not saying we run on everything. We don’t expect mainframes or high-end UNIX systems in the cloud. Our software runs on Linux in user space. We will qualify major commodity hardware vendors and also rely on testing performed by the Linux distributions. The cloud can be “tuned” by the end user’s hardware selection which will provide the appropriate performance to their application. Nodes can be from different vendors and host different disk capacities. The end result is freedom of commodity hardware selection by the customer. Our early adopters would agree with you, there is tremendous value in this strategy.
